I am sure everyone has read about this ..
Mr Chen Jiahao ... 23 year old ... blogger ... wrote about A*STAR and Mr Philip Yeo ... supposedly about some "defamatory" comments about A*STAR and Mr Yeo himself ("supposedly" because it was never stated which were the defamatory comments). So, Mr Chen got threatened with a vague lawsuit that did not specify which were the bad statements, and he eventually gave in and took down the ENTIRE site, with the exception of an apology.
I have a few thoughts ... very deep concerned thoughts about the whole situation. This is getting rather disturbing. I am living in a country where the Govt threatens with the all expensive lawsuit against a student, when he basically made some comments that the Govt found offensive OVERSEAS, in blog hosted on a FOREIGN server.
What was the Big Brother so worried about that made them go to such extent? If the purpose was to prevent further discussion about the comments, their actions had definitely resulted in the opposite. Many many more sites now spring up in discussion on about the comments, but about concerns of how ridiculous the actions of the Mr Yeo was.
Sorry Mr Chen, you were never meant to win. You probably didn't even wanna win anything, but they struck you down anyways. They know you (or any Singaporeans to begin with) would not be able to afford the time and the money to fight the case. You're already guilty before you could fight it. They accused you of defamatory, when they did not even specify how you did it. You could have resisted, and they could then have you jailed for not giving into their demands to remove your blog.
I am wondering, if I started saying how I hated Microsoft in my entire blog. Or dedicate a special blog just to bash how i dislike their products or Bill Gates. Would Mr Gates come after me? Probably not. Why? Because if it was baseless, unfair accusations and comments, no one will give a shit and some people might even leave comments to bash me. There are "invisible" market forces who will balance the comments out and readers will decide for themselves if what I write make sense.
But the Singapore Government apparently do not yet have the same level of trust for its own people. They do not trust the people to make up their minds on what is right and what is wrong. I had spoken to some people who supports the Singapore government's harsh treatments and strong arm tactics to keep the country at peace, and use that as a reasoning why we should trust the government to know what's best. That is a very dangerous proposition. It is a same situation to having Microsoft controlling 90% of the browser market and you see how they had slacked in their product development of IE. I am sure both Microsoft and the Singapore Government will go explain why they still are the innovators, while at the same time destroying those companies and people who threaten their dominance.
What is the eventual result of using "fear" as a tactic to ensure peace in Singapore? The younger generation become subdued and content with what they have. They do not question, and accept all decisions by the government with little actions to resist. These Singaporeans are not those who would like to concern themselves with the way the government runs the show. They just want to make their living and make stay happy. They are probably not interested to give actions to make the country better, just their own lives because it is "not their problem". If these are the type of Singaporean that the government wants to groom, I'd say they've done a mighty job. But what I think, is that the Singapore Government wants something else.
Singapore Government wants entrepreneurs, they want talents and they want a nation that loves its country. They are trying to sell us songs that make us feel that "This is my country, this my flag, this my family, these are my friends, We are Singaporeans". But the opposite is happening. The foreign talents who come in do not "love the country", they love "the money". The younger Singaporeans who love the country feels that they can't do what they want, say what they want, and they leave. Like a feeder school, Singapore is breeding young Singaporeans they wish to keep , but they can't stay loyal. Those who stay and can't do/say what they want, are constantly looking for ways to "get out". Singapore wants to have a nation of young entrepreneurs who takes risks and think creative, but at the same time, Singapore also wants control.
So ... what do you want Singapore? What do you want? If you want change, you have to let go. Just when I thought I see signs changing, like the relaxing of the censorship laws to allow more uncut movies, and our very own "speaker's corner", things like the A*STAR incident totally destroys my faith in the Government. The Govt says something and does another. They claim to promote freedom of speech, yet they do not execute all the way. They claim they hear, but they do not listen. You want to make a speech at the "speaker's corner"? Sure, as long as you head down to the police post to register. I know changes are hard. But if you want changes, you should not execute it in a crippled manner and then use it to support your future claims for the lack of interest in it.
I love to see a better and freer Singapore. But the day is not today ... and from the looks of it, we still have a long way to go.

Can I say whatever I want?
Can I say whatever I want in a blog? This is a tricky question ... recently apple sued some bloggers for releasing some confidential information that were supposedly not to be released under NDAs. I guess that would be not right due to the fact that there were some legal bindings to the information concerned.
How about regular ramblings and criticism about things in general? Do we have to watch what we say? Is it due to the fact that blogs are public, we have to be extra careful about what we write? I mean ... do you have to justify your criticism or complaints in your blog? Do you have to think about what your thoughts are before writing them out? Isn't that almost like censorship? But if blogs are personal thoughts and opinions .... why should it need to be subjected to journalistic integrity?
Eg. Do I have to justify if I dislike someone's face?

Too many blogs ..
Too many blogs .... I had started sonysuxx.blogspot.com, nintendoplay.blogspot.com etc ... but my time is limited ... to see myself updating 3-4 blogs everyday is tough ... very tough ...
but at the same time .. if i talk about every damn thing i am interested in my blog ... it will also lose its focus ....
well heck it .... to me a blog is like a diary ... i will not keep multiple diaries to keep track of different things ....
so .. here i am gonna stop updating elsewhere and continue to blog here ....

Customer is King
I run a restaurant ... and assuming most who reads this blog are my personal friends, you should know. My restaurant's main target group are young working adults ... Yuppies? Rich, well paid executives? Ok ... you get the picture ... And in the past year, i've seen many of them come and go in my restaurant ... and fair to say that most of them are rather civil. But there is an annoying pattern I have noticed among this group, and luckily they are not the majority. But I do see quite a number of them.
Behaviors:
1) They think they should be given seats even if we're full.
2) I said "sorry I can't give you an estimate of how long you have to wait". "Are you telling me to leave?". Do they have to be angry and make it sound like we're out to offend them? I mean, why get so short tempered?
3) They expect to be treated like Kings (and Queens). "Why do i have to wait to pay?" "Sorry sir, as you can see, we have to clear other people's bills that came before you." "you should have someone handling this what?!" ???
4)" Can I sit there?" (pointing to a 4 seater). "Sorry madam, the table is for bigger groups and we expect a crowd tonight". "But I don't see anyone now what! And the 2 seater is so uncomfortable!"
5)"Do I get a discount with any credit card?""Yes sir, UOB""Can I use this stamp card to redeem my free meal too" Sorry sir, you can't combine offers""So? I am sure you can make an exception!!" (after much haggling, my manager took the card, then realised, the stamp card has expired 1 mth ago) " Sorry sir, the card has expired". "So what? I want to see your boss""Sorry my boss is not around tonight, I am the manager in charge here. I am sorry I can't combine the offers""I am not coming back here again!"
I really wish I could talk back and scream at these idiots. "Have you ever ran a restaurant?""Are you fucking blind you can't see there are 4 persons serving 75 of you fuckers?""You think I should hire more staff? Are you gonna pay for them?""If we've told you the wait for the food might be long, why are u complaining?""I have said sorry and have taken the item off your bill, why do you still wanna make a big fuss? What do you want? Kowtow?""Can you be more considerate?? Why take up table for 4 when you have only 2 persons??"
All these bad arrogant spoilt brats, taught me to truly appreciate those understanding ones. I channel my anger to treat the good customers even better than usual. And why isit that always those who say "Don't worry, I can tell you're busy", are those foreigners? This is not a stereotype ... this is unbiased observations. Singapore still have a long way to go before we become a gracious society.

Geeky over Tiger :P
Just installed a copy of the new Macintosh OS on my powerbook .. and man am i impressed ...
It boots much much faster.... and dashboard .... so damn cool .... u windows users should really check out dashboard .... it makes your computer... much more gadgetary .... funny how on windows, users hate spyware and mini bots installed in their computers .. this dashboards to me, are like little trinkets of virtual gadgets that u install .. and can have them pulled from a drawer anytime u wish ....
then this spotlight feature which i didn't think much of ... turns out to be a life saver for me on more occasions than one ... think of it as google for the desktop ... u type in a keyword and even before u finish typing the word, matches start appearing .. it is that fast .... and the word can appear anywhere ... incl a word doc, an email message .. damn .. this thing finds anything anywhere ... u gotta see it to believe it
ichat? .. man this new baby is cool too ... I have my ICQ, AIM, Jabber and .Mac users all one 1 list ... I just wish they could allow me to add MSN and yahoo users too .... then it would be IM nirvana :)

Dark water ...
Last night .... got a call from Colombia .... a supplier called to tell me their CEO's visit had to be brought forward and will be arriving right the next day. I was grateful for that call. Yes, not just for the notice .. but for waking me up. I heard a weird noise coming from the kitchen. It was like someone erected a fountain or waterfall at the back of the apt.
Well ... close enough ... the kitchen was flooded ... apparently in the back room behind the kitchen which houses the washing machine, a water pipe broke and it was like "the day after tomorrow" happening there. If I had not woke up earlier .. it could have been wetter ... and the waterbill could have been even worse ...
Well .... I am glad I got woken up in the middle of the night ... for once. .. :)

ok .. it is time for more ramblings....
I am so thoroughly tied up with so much work it is not even funny. I am gonna make myself a promise now ... I will update this blog as often as i can ...
often pple stare into the crystal and wonder .. waht do i see in the future ...
I find it even tougher to look back the past few weeks and ask .. wat do i see? ... man my memory is definitely failing me ..
random things that hit me:
1) Spending too much time with my Nintendo DS .... completed this game called PacPix ... damn it is good .... but way too short ... finished it like in 3 days .... basically u draw a pacman .. it comes to life and it chomps up things on the screen. well it really is not as simple as it sounds .... but it is real fun .. :P while it lasted .. Now I am wearing a minish cap wondering around the land of Hyrule :) .... Zelda rocks ...
2) Ok .... been counting down to E3 .. was so excited about the new Xbox 360 ... until all the leaks basically revealed every damn thing there is abt it .... and the announcment is still at least 2 days away .... MS still has a lot to learn from Apple and Nintendo .. even at keeping secrets ... Sony Ps3 somehow doesn't get me as excited as what is coming from MS and Nintendo ... Revolution is just way too mysterious and it is generating some serious hype purely due to speculation .. damn they are good at keepi ng their mout shut. And one thing i can't wait for? Nintendo Online ... it is free :P .. eat that Xbox .... but well .. the Xbox is looking like the coolest piece if gear ... now unless PS3 blows me off this E3 announcement, my money is going to Mr Gates this fall.
3) Star Wars on the horizon. Well .. the 3rd one ... and reviews coming in are all positively better than the first 2 .... What more can I say .... May the force be with everyone ....
4) I am undergoing lotsa personal changes this past few months .. I have explored things i never thought i would .. and I am implementing changes in my life that i never thought I would .. some of them actions do conflict with my previous stands on certain issues .... now ... this is cryptic ... just as a lot of my personal posts .. but hey .... let's just say that I am learning to let things loose .... and not be so stubborn and anal when it comes to handling problems..... let go ... and not be so hard on myself ... i have been suffering many mental disturbances .. and i am actually improving my mental health in the process ....
Well ... here's the first post of many to come ...

Straitstimes subscription based now
Straitstimes .... arguably the most biased newspaper in the world ... and the only paper in Singapore where u can get all the politically correct news (to none other than the PAP) is now subscription based only. WOW!!!!
Lemme count how many papers out there in the world does that? .... NY times was the first to start a "free registration" thingy and almost every major online newspaper followed suit (incl. Straitstimes) .... Now ... Singapore straitstimes wants to be the leader .... to be one of the first *ahem* "mainstream" newspaper to go subscription. We'll see how well it does ...
I have stopped reading the local govt propaganda brainwashing newspaper for a while already .. but started to read up the online version ... now they want me to pay .... ok ... I'll stick with my usual Google news, NY times and BBC, India times etc .... and if there's any Singapore-worthy happenings? I think it shld appear there .... but I seriously wonder .... who cares ...

The story goes: I placed the Kungfu Hustle DVD online for sale at ebay. Then it was pulled by ebay saying that they were contacted by Sony Pictures that I am infringing on their copyright policies. I contacted Sony and they gave me a canned answer. I responded angrily demanding an explanation for double standards and they didn't respond. Once again, I posted the item on ebay after 1 week and they pulled it again. Here are the email exchanges, starting from the earliest.

This doesn't makes sense. Plenty of people sells Code 1 DVDs to the rest of the world even though they are not released (or never released) and no one is going after these individuals. I live in a region Code 3 country (Singapore), but Code 1 discs are available everywhere. Does it make all these retailers illegal? Furthermore, I see other ebay selllers still listing this item, as well as other Asia DVDs/CDs sites like "Yesasia.com" selling the same item as well worldwide including US. I am re-selling my DVD to someone else in other parts of the world, not just US. This region coding technology is a chore and a hassle in an extremely interconnected world of today. Everyone is more international than ever before thanks to the proliferation of understanding between cultures and countries. To set up this region coding to prevent reduced profits due to your inefficient distribution penalizes those individuals who are well travelled and speak multiple languages. I am a fan of japanese movies, HK movies, US movies, and as a result of your region coding, it has extremely inconvenienced me in my pursuit of exploring the different myriad of movies out there. Would the only legal solution for people like me (which there are plenty) be to purchase a DVD player from each different region so as to enjoy DVDs from different countries?
I am copying this email message to Cnet, ainitcool.com, as well as Roger Ebert in hopes that this ridiculous issue of region coding which was introduced to the world by the selfish media giants, may be brought to more attention and generate discussion.
I love movies, and I love music. I have always sought to support the movie and music industry by purchasing originals although I live in a region which sees the proliferation of pirated medias. I have even sought to study film in college and is now in the process of shooting my own short film. But in recent years, the media giants have been seeking many ways to prevent piracy and their methods have been taking its toll on legal supporters like myself. In light of all the "rules and regulations" set by these bodies, it is giving the "law-abiding" end-users less reason to support them. There's always the big media firms complaining about the how much profits they are losing through piracy and how they have to implement DRM to fight the pirates. But who is speaking up for the legitimate users like us who are getting their rights shreds to bits over the years?

And after more than 1 week, I still haven't heard back from Sony. So thus I relisted the item, seeing that tons of people are still selling Kung Fu Hustle on ebay, obviously ebay didn't go after them. But 1 day after listing it, it got removed again. This time I am mighty pissed as expected.

This doesn't makes sense. Plenty of people sells Code 1 DVDs to the rest of the world even though they are not released (or never released) and no one is going after these individuals. I live in a region Code 3 country (Singapore), but Code 1 discs are available everywhere. Does it make all these retailers illegal? Furthermore, I see other ebay selllers still listing this item, as well as other Asia DVDs/CDs sites like "Yesasia.com" selling the same item as well worldwide including US. What gives them more right to do so than myself? Are you coming after me because I am easier to scare/pick on? Why don't you pick on someone your own size.
I am re-selling my DVD to someone else in other parts of the world, not just US. Piracy is a term used for thieves and I am certainly not pleased for being branded as such when what I am doing is exactly what everyone else on ebay is doing - selling different region DVDs to places which are of not the same region indicated.
This region coding technology is a chore and a hassle in an extremely interconnected world of today. Everyone is more international than ever before thanks to the proliferation of understanding between cultures and countries. To set up this region coding to prevent reduced profits due to your inefficient distribution penalizes those individuals who are well travelled and speak multiple languages. I am a fan of japanese movies, HK movies, US movies, and as a result of your region coding, it has extremely inconvenienced me in my pursuit of exploring the different myriad of movies out there. Would the only legal solution for people like me (which there are plenty) be to purchase a DVD player from each different region so as to enjoy DVDs from different countries?

Dee Veee Dees
Hmmm .... I shouldn't be spending so much money on DVDs ... but the words "Limited Edition" and "Collector's Edition" always have an indescribable effect on me. An exceptionally strong allure :P ... Oh what a sucker ...
Now here goes my latest splurges:
1) Ghandi Special Edition. - Gold case - should be the first print. The subsequent ones are all with black DVD cases. Oh.... pretty :P
2) Rain Man Special Edition - with a transparent clear sleeve. First print too. OOOOh ...
3) Kung Fu Hustle Collector's Gift Set - I got 3 of them hoping to sell them on ebay, but got pulled cos Sony contacted me saying that I have violated their piracy act and that they are the only authorized entity to sell that item in US. I say Screw them. Gonna relist it and see what they'll do to me. But if you guys are interested, let me know. There's only 5000 pieces in the world and it is very cool - with a leather case, and an embossed palm print, as well as other goodies.
4) JFK Special 2 disc editon - this not only contains the Director's cut of the magnificent movie, it also contains tons of extras. Nice :)

3) Infernal Affairs 8 disc edition

It's been a while!
Wooo wee ....
It has been quite a while since my last posting ... ahahhah ... lotsa things been going on and sucking the time and life juice out of me. So what's been keeping me bz bz ?? Now in no particular order .. here goes:
1) Moved to a new place. Yes boys and girls! I am now happily relocated to Upper Thomson Peirce View Apts. So any of you dudes and dudettes looking for a kaki to supper with, you just call my hotline #96945061.
2) Restuarant got on TV last week. That means business boom. ... But even before the Tv show started, this has been an incredibly BZ month. Can't really complain about that :P
3) Been trying to rush to get my script finalized. And I yes it is done! .... I am quite pleased with the changes to "the Black box". Those interested to have a read, shoot me an email to ask for it. If not, just wait for the short film on it to come out in July :) ... Will start principal shooting next month. So excited!!!
4) Getting ready to re-start my life. Running errands for pple ... My free time is being re-allocated to do other pple's stuffs ... I am truly drained.
Well, that's about sums up the past few weeks. The moving part was definitely tough. Moving forward the next few weeks. Gonna start my midnight jogging routine again and start nourishing my body with better care. Its been neglected for way too long.

The Academy Awards!!!
Ok . it is the time of the year again. Yes, there's the golden horseys ... and the Golden Globes .... but nothing quite keep the blood pumping like the Oscars Academia!!!
This year, there are so many good movies .. mostly are not big money rakers and that's quite something. This goes to say that this year's Academy will honor some works for their true artistic merits, not merely based on some popularity votes. That's not to say popular = bad. It is just sad that there were years when too many good films go unnoticed just because they didn't look quite as glitzy.
Now this year's forerunners (in no order of preference) are:
1) Aviator
2) Million Dollar Baby
3) Ray
4) Hotel Rwanda
5) Sideways
I have watched everyone of them except Sideways and I must say they all were very very good. They are all winners in my opinion and if you haven't caught them, please do so I urge you. These movies are not exactly uplifting types, but they all celebrate the power of human determination and the will do make a difference in their own and/or in other people's lives. Except Sideways which is a comedy drama, but is also very highly rated by Roger Ebert, my favourite movie critic.
Who am I rooting for? Million Dollar Baby. Hillary Swank delivered a knockout performance (no pun intended) once again and Clint Eastwood delivered too, as a man caught in a very very difficult situation. However I got a feeling the big prize is going to the Aviator - and I won't have any complains either. Great story telling and great performance by Leo. And also Jamie Foxx in Ray was astounding!!! .... and Hotel Rwanda is such a powerful film ... aw!! .. Guys ... this year's Oscars got some of the best stories ever.

Mo Chuishle
Every now and then a movie will come by and makes you fall in love with the art all over again. A projector, shooting a light stream of moving colors and images, that reflects off the silver screen. The synchronized sounds and music completes the illusion of a moving and living storybook. And what makes a great movie is what makes a great storybook too - its story.
Million Dollar Baby is a great movie, with a great story. This story has a heart, and it touches the people who watches it. It is a simple story nonetheless, of a girl who wants to make a difference in her life, and a man placed into a position to make the decisions that will eventually affect the rest of their lives. Clint Eastwood plays Frank who is a boxing trainer and Hillary Swank plays Maggie who wants to be a boxer. Morgan Freeman plays Scrappy, a character who is the friend of both and also narrates the throughout the film and that is what seems to tie the whole film together.
The joys and the pains in Frankie and Maggie's relationship is heartfelt and the story works so well not as much as a boxing story, but as a study of 2 characters being placed into situations which they must take the routes they are most unwiling to take, in order to make a difference in each other's lives - for better or for worse.
I will not want to give away the plot of the story, and strongly i urge everyone to check out this movie which is not very much publicised yet deserves all the attention it can get.

Valentine this, valentine that ...
I had a bizarre valentine's day yesterday. It is definitely the most memorable one. No it wasn't one filled with sex, booze, romance, wine and flowers blah blah. But it was one of theatrics and dramatics - filled with tears, despressed souls and individuals indulged in self-pity. Gladfully, none of the above applies to me, I was just a spectator in all the happenings. I was just running my restaurant watching the world go by (and keeping the cash that comes my way :P).
Now what I have noticed - almost all the single individuals whom i chat with or interacted with felt one of the following: depression, sadness, unhappiness, loneliness - all because it is "V-day" and they are "still single" without a date. Now this is freaky .... Cos it is just a day with a name attached to it and if it doesn't apply to you, get over it man. You don't see Buddhists or Muslims commiting suicide during Christmas because they felt left out! But yesterday was the most extreme I had ever encountered in the my singlehood "V-day" experiences. Almost every single men and women was depressed.
I think I will be seeing more of these as I grow older as they can only feel shittier about their singlehood the older they get. One of my girl friend (I shall not be naming names) even came to my restaurant and started crying the moment I mentioned "Happy V-day!!". Woah ... I mean talk about extreme reaction man!! But it is truly "the day" that makes people compelled to do things out of the ordinary, or think in ways that may not be the most rational. For instance, this is one day people use as an excuse to execute one of the following cos it would give it the extra punch:
1) express their undying love
2) express they deepest feelings for the other party (may it be good or bad :P)
3) get hitched
4) get laid
5) or sadly get rejected
Now if you have got the right person, everyday would be like a V-day. But the expectations for extreme actions is much higher on this "tagged lovers day" so I guess, the pressure to act is much higher than usual. So whatever the case, it is a day where not just people get all the fun, but they get all the shit, just because of social pressure. Sigh .... all these unnecessary pain and self inflicted sufferings just because of a day that compels one to social norms.
I say, please get jiggy and happy. Do what you like whenever you like, don't just wait for Valentine's day. And if things turn sour, screw it and enjoy the rest of the day, week or year. :)

Peee Asss Peee .. Drool ....
Ok .... i succumbed to my desires .... it was not a need. It was pure desire for a gadget that I totally do not need. But it is soo cool.... I can't help it!!!! I haven't felt like a kid, wanting a toy ... the toy behind the glass window. The toy that shimmers under the spotlight, the toy that is "sold out" everywhere ... the toy that I just gotta have ....
And now that I got it .... oh my gosh ... I pick it up .. look at it ... fondles it .... but shit .. the truth is i can't do jack shit with it. It is quite a task to put movie clips on the damn thing. It comes with only a miserable 32MB memory stick and I have to pay like another $150 to get a 512MB stick (when I could have simply bought an ipod shuffle that does music pretty well and doubles as a thumb drive and is 1/20th the size of the PSP). It doesn't have any games that I want - so far it is mainly strategy, RPG and racing games, all of which I wouldn't touch. Then there're the puzzle games like puzzle bobble which I like very much, but I would not pay a crazy 90 bucks for a game that I could buy a gamecube version for less than half the price. And now that I got it .... oh my gosh ... I pick it up .. look at it ... fondles it .... but shit .. the truth is i can't do jack shit with it. It is quite a task to put movie clips on the damn thing. It comes with only a miserable 32MB memory stick and I have to pay like another $150 to get a 512MB stick (when I could have simply bought an ipod shuffle that does music pretty well and doubles as a thumb drive and is 1/20th the size of the PSP). It doesn't have any games that I want - so far it is mainly strategy, RPG and racing games, all of which I wouldn't touch. Then there're the puzzle games like puzzle bobble which I like very much, but I would not pay a crazy 90 bucks for a game that I could buy a gamecube version for less than half the price. New Year .. A New Hope

Now the world seems much clearer. The air seems much easier to breathe.
All because, I've learnt to let things be. Let it be. 3 simple words. Truly words of wisdom.
The mind is a complex toy. But it is only complex if u made it so. And Complexity can stem from not being able to let things go. It is all about letting things be the way they are supposed to be - not expecting results from every action that you execute. Cos we all want to be "in control" of situations, when the truth is all that the only thing that we can be in control of , is ourselves. We should let everything be the way it wants/supposed/fated to be. As long as we've done our part, we should be accountable to ourselves. We should not be acountable for anything that we have no control over.
That's the problem with me. I have been expecting, hoping, for things to work/turn out in a certain way. More often then not, they will not and they do not. Then I feel shitty, crappy and all. And it all boils down to my own doing - I am just crapping over my own thoughts and delusions. This applies not just to relationships (all sorts) , but to work, and everyday living.

The Aviator and Hotel Rwanda
2 great movies in 1 weekend ...
Let's start with Aviator. Leonardo Dicaprio delivered an incredible performance. This movie kinda reminded me of "Citizen Kane" and that's a good thing. Citizen Kane was a masterpiece, and so is this movie. Leo plays Howard Hughes, a genius who is only constrained by the limits of his physical/mental capacity, as well as the people around him. He stresses out the people working for him due to his inexhaustible flame of creativity, but what those people do not realize, is that he stresses out himself even more. Finally you see his body/mind breaking down due to the incapability to sustain his passion and Leonardo did a wonderful job portraying this suffering genius. Please watch this film as this is one truly great performance by a highly talented actor.
Hotel Rwanda, is a true story based on a genocide that occurred 10 years ago. 1 million people were killed in a span of 100 days and it is truly horrific to learn that racial "cleansing" can still happen in our generation. This is the story of Hotel Milles Collines and its manager, Paul. It is the story of a modern day "Oskar Schindler" and it is truly gripping. The story told of how the inaction of people, can cause the death of so many. This is a movie that spurs people to action, and not just sit back and read/watch news - but to act upon it. Because people's lives depend on it.

Bush's Freedom Peace Talk
Bush was inaugurated yesterday and his speech has a central theme - Spread Freedom. There was no direct reference to Iraq, and no specific mention of any plans for anything. It was a speech of ideals, goals and his beliefs on how freedom should be spread across the world. Below are some of his quotes, along with some of my comments.
"For a half century, America defended our own freedom by standing watch on distant borders. After the shipwreck of communism came years of relative quiet, years of repose, years of sabbatical — and then there came a day of fire."
- So for the past 1/2 a century (presumably he started count after the 1st Day of Fire - Pearl Habour), US has been standing watch on distant borders? Has he forgotten Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Vietnam, Korea and oh yes, Gulf War by his daddy-o? Is selling of arms to Isreal "standing watch on distant borders"? "Shipwreck of communism?" check out China baby.
"The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands..... The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world."
- Bush used war to liberate Iraqis from a "tyrant" ruler Saddam. He did this using phony evidence (WMD anyone?). Kinda put his "expansion of freedom in all the world" into perspective. Is his next plan to invade all the other countries whom he thinks are not aligned with his view of freedom and will create pokey evidence to do so?
"From the day of our Founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of the Maker of Heaven and earth. Across the generations we have proclaimed the imperative of self-government, because no one is fit to be a master, and no one deserves to be a slave. Advancing these ideals is the mission that created our Nation. ... Now it is the urgent requirement of our nation's security, and the calling of our time."
- So he is starting to align the beliefs of this government with that of "the Maker". And along with this is "the calling of our time", what is he setting us for? So if we're with this goverment, we're with God?
"So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world."
- Gulps! Shudders to think what these "democratic movements" are. More tyrannical war to end tyranny?? Violence begets violence buddy.
"This is not primarily the task of arms, though we will defend ourselves and our friends by force of arms when necessary."
- Now the word is out. War was he meant. So when is "necessary"? When they found/create a bunch of reasons to go preemptive again?
"We will persistently clarify the choice before every ruler and every nation: The moral choice between oppression, which is always wrong, and freedom, which is eternally right. America will not pretend that jailed dissidents prefer their chains, or that women welcome humiliation and servitude, or that any human being aspires to live at the mercy of bullies."
- Is this Judgement Day? Judged by who? The "Second coming" (2nd inauguration). Who does he think he is??
"Democratic reformers facing repression, prison, or exile can know: America sees you for who you are: the future leaders of your free country."
- Err ... What if the country doesn't think democracy is good for their people? For instance China? How about the Arab countries who believes in their version of democratic-dictatorship - like Iraq? Oh we saw what happened to that. "Future leaders in your free country" - we've got an example here! Reagan planted one called "Saddam" in Iraq to take care of Iran and when that went out of control, they made him a prisoner. How's that for reversal and who makes the rules?
" I ask our youngest citizens to believe the evidence of your eyes. You have seen duty and allegiance in the determined faces of our soldiers. You have seen that life is fragile, and evil is real, and courage triumphs. Make the choice to serve in a cause larger than your wants, larger than yourself — and in your days you will add not just to the wealth of our country, but to its character."
- So the "cause larger than your wants" that was "WMD" is now "freedom and liberty". And when the choice is made on wrong information, is that cause still justified? And if the cause is not justified - what kind of character is being added to the country? And war costs money - lots of money and it sure doesn't add wealth to the country, it takes it away.
"In America's ideal of freedom, the exercise of rights is ennobled by service, and mercy, and a heart for the weak. ... And our country must abandon all the habits of racism, because we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time."
- Ask the abused prisoners in Abu Ghraib about service, mercy and the heart for the weak. .. and oh yeah about racism too.
"Renewed in our strength — tested, but not weary — we are ready for the greatest achievements in the history of freedom."
- Geeze ... invading a country based on fake evidence and then claiming it to be an act of liberation is a great achievement of freedom. Let's see how history books will write about it in 20 years. It is so sad that people NOW do not see the truth as it is.

Thoughts of the past week
I haven't updated the blogs with my "deep thoughts" of late. Mostly interesting articles that I've read, but that's all. Well I'll admit, it is easier to post those. Take up less time. So for the fans of my ramblings, sorry :P. Really who reads my blog anyways. So today, I've decided to write in a more freeform way. Whatever comes to my mind.
Ok, so I went to Sting's concert last Monday. Awesome!!!! This guy rocks my world. His music, his words, his works. Beautiful. And I got a feeling this might be the last time I am gonna see him live, so I tried to breathe in every air of the atmosphere, and soak into the ambience of the night. It was nice of him to remember coming back to Singapore 10 years ago, and I wonder how many of the people in the indoor stadium that night was like me thinking "I was there ..." :). Was kinda worried if the friend I was bringing will enjoy the show since she knew nuts about his music - "I only knew the stalker song ...". Now she knows a bit more about the shape of his heart and this englishman who spent sometime in NY. :)
Talking God. This was a "spiritual" week for me. Talked alot about Religion, God, Buddhism, Tarot blah blah .... with a bunch of people who were very much touched by HIM. Reminded me of the time when I was bashing Mac users and eventually became a Mac User myself. I think my friend was right, I am pretty closed though how open I claim myself to be. I should probably extend the kind of openness to God and way I opened my heart to Buddhism. I started reading the Bible again - this time, using my heart. I started praying everynight, like I did when I was small. Strange things have been happening. I think I am gonna be eating my words again.
Feeling sorry for Buddha. Now this is weird having me talk about Buddhism after talking about God. Cos I kinda feel bad for Buddha that the theories of "LIFE" and "PERSPECTIVES" that he had taught, has transformed into joss sticks toddling and idol worshipping traditions. Whatever happened to the "Middle way" and the "8 fold path"? Well, it has since become "the extreme ways" and "8 ways of burning papers". :P Well well, seems like enlightenment is the last thing on these people's minds now.
Ok ... so talking about how I was a Mac Basher? ... Now I am sooo in love with Macs. After so many years of being made fun of as a Mac User, I am so happy to see Apple kicking ass these days. Latest Toys from the Appleland? Let's start with the iPod Shuffle. Very Cool Very Small and Creative is gonna start peeing in their pants again. Granted it has no screen, but it is as small as a thumbdrive, almost like a chewing gum strip, and it is very clean looking. Oh man I am a sucker for clean designs. Clean and simple. Mac mini is another apple truimph. This machine will make tons of converts. This little computer will fly off the shelves cos why? It is simple, clean, and cheap. No .. cheap is not a good word to use. Inexpensive. YESSSS :)
Now another of cool toy recently acquired. Resident Evil 4. Awesome Game ... totally blew my mind. I wish the rest of the PS2 and Xbox world would just wake up and get themselves a Gamecube. This game is truly one of the best, most immersive I have ever experienced on any platform. :) The graphics .... are also top notch. Wow .. just awesome .... can't wait to play it when I go home tonight.
Too much money lost. Ok ... 3 weekends of mahjong has had a toll on my health and pocket. Gonna stop this week. I haven't watched a movie in a few weeks ... time to hit the movie theaters soon. What's showing now? Alfie, Aviator, damn ... too many good shows .... gonna have to choose. Do I have to choose?? Argh ...

What we read from the news is what is provided to the news reporters ... who, in turn are getting their news from??... none other than the ones who wants to mislead. They do not research on the credibility .. they "relay" not "report" anymore.
And yet the most disgusting thing we see now, is how Mr Bush is trying to stand by his decisions as correct and just.

US gives up search for WMD
Ok, the news is in. No Weapons of Mass Destruction. Period. Before the invasion, it was all the shoddy facts and evidence they claimed to support it. Right now, after the invasion, after winning the US election, after the death toll of 1350 American troops with 10000 wounded, our dear Mr Bush still has nothing in his hands. But wait, he still has the world in his hands, he still stands as the president of the only country in the world with the capability to nuke the world, and he has proven how easy it is to convince 1/2 of America with cleverly constructed media.
U.S. Wraps Up Search for Banned Weapons in Iraq
I anticipate this to be the next topic to be mentioned by Jon Stewart to create some laughs. But, what the American people would be laughing, would be at their own gullibility. So is Mr Bush going to apologize to the Americans who has fought so hard for the war that was unjustified, or to the Iraqis who's lives have been shattered due to this invasion? Somehow I can sense a spin doctor working his magic behind the scenes now. Let's wait for the drama to unfold ... :)

Englishman In Singapore
Last night, I went to the Sting's concert. It was a great experience. I think this time, the crowd was better than it was 10 years ago. Here we are looking at a 54 year old man ("virile" old man in my friend's own words), who is able to get an entire sold out concert full of people to stand and dance to his music throughout most of the night. Read: Throughout Most of the concert. And this is not the teeny booper crowd we're talking. These are folks ranging ages twenties to forties and fifties. Many of these people are his fans, and it was a very surreal feeling, just listening to the crowd singing along with him.
Here's hoping there's many more years of great music from him. He's inspired millions and I hope there'll be many more. Well he has made at least one new fan out of the friend I brought along.

Celebration of Music
Songs = Music + Lyrics
Music is like the body and the lyrics make up the soul. Through the melody, the music takes shape. Through the lyrics, the music is given thoughts and meaning.
It is incredible that through the vibrations of the air, frequencies can be tuned and fashioned. The patterns of sounds composed become a melody. The melody of sounds can be arranged in an infinite number of ways and like a piece of art, it is an expression of one's feelings - be it happiness or sadness.
The lyrics of a song, serves to add meaning to a melody. The melody can be on its own, but the lyrics add to it a personality, and gives it a character. The lyrics can be the description of the melody or it can be the face of the body. It can be shaped to fit the melody, to enhance it or even deface it.
Great songs are usually a combination of great melody and beautiful lyrics. I love true artists who does both and excel.
Now what is this blog entry all about?? Well, guess really about nothing. I just felt inspired to write about this because I was listening to a new CD box set I just bought. It is a collection of songs by different artists from 11 record companies, all written by the venerable James Wong. These songs written by him are truly truly great. If you understand Mandarin and Cantonese, you should really give this box set a go. The lyrics are masterful and the melodies show how versatile he really is. The death of James Wong has brought for the first time the collaboration of 11 record companies and that speaks volumes about the kind of respect he gathers in the industry.
Now how about the English music industry, who do I prefer? Sting. Go read the lyrics of his songs - they read like poetry without even the music to accompany them. Why Should I Cry For You? Fields of Gold... and many more. And his music? He is an extremely talented fellow who tries different genres and styles of music for each of his albums. He never bores. He is also coming to Singapore for a concert on January 10th. So go get a ticket and get lost in his music. :)

Say Goodbye to 2004 ....
Guys and girls ... 2005 has arrived .. and looking back, it had been a tumultuous 2004. Even up to the very last few days of 2004, it was not an easy one for many, especially for those who's lives have been affected by the tsunami disaster. As of last count, 155,000 were confirmed dead and many still missing. At least 1/2 a million people in Sri Lanka are now homeless. 2004 has ended in a way that left millions dead, mourning, or grieving. Never in the recent history of mankind has new year been so difficult to pass. Compare the deaths in this tragedy to the one on Sep 11th 2001 where 3000 were dead, and you see the proportion of this disaster.
I had said before many times ... that 2004 is a year of change, and who would have thought the last days of the year brought more changes for almost everyone on this earth. Here's to all who have suffered, and may the new year bring new hopes and bring about a new beginning for all.

Fav Movies of 2004 Overview
Ok ... this is my list of the year ... in no particular order. These are movies which I have watched only. I am sure there are those like "Aviator" and "Million Dollar Baby" that could have been on this list, but it wouldn't be fair if I have never watched them before. Well, I might revise it again when I have watched them at a later time, or they will be on my next year's list. for now, these are exceptional in my opinion, this year. Fav Movies of 2004 Part 4
The Twilight Samurai
Great movie. Quiet yet powerful. This is not a movie about sword fights, bloodshed, revenge blah blah. It is about a father's love for his family, and a childhood love rediscovered. Now this movie is not really a 2004 movie, but apparently the western world (or the rest of the world outside Japan) only picked it up after it won a couple of awards in the Japanese equivalent of their oscars. The story is set in ancient Japan, but the problems and issues faced by the main character are just as real as those that you see in modern times.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
This year lotsa sci-fi fantasy movies topped my list. Is it because I am in need of a means of escapism? Or is this a boom year for people to think unreal? Whatever, this particular one was so simple and sweet in its delivery, I absolutely loved every moment of it. This was like a garage project done by a few people who believed in the idea, and decided to let their passion rule their head when they did this film. It was funny, campy, and yet so full of charm. This was one movie that stole my heart because of its style and the characters.
The Identity
Ok this movie actually came out last year in US. But it only came to Singapore this year. What a bummer. I'll list it as this year' anyway since many people overlooked this movie. Granted the ending was a little too .. how should I put it, slasher styled? But I liked the context of the entire story. Not your typical slasher movie. This one's got the brain.

The Singapore Red Cross Society in response to the call for international assistance by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, is launching a public appeal to help the victims of the Bay of Bengal earthquake and tidal waves.
As an immediate response to the disaster, the Singapore Red Cross will be sending a sum of Singapore dollars, One hundred and fifty thousand (S$150,000) to Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India (through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies). The Singapore Red Cross is also in touch with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the national societies of all affected countries to determine what assistance is required to assist the victims.
The Singapore Red Cross hopes to raise Singapore dollars, One Million (S$1,000,000) for this appeal.
The Singapore Red Cross calls on Singaporeans and other like-minded
organisations to come forward to contribute to this appeal and help the victims affected by the earthquake and tidal waves that swept across the India Ocean and affected Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Maldives, India and Sri Lanka.
The Singapore Red Cross requests donation for the affected countries. The money donated to this emergency appeal will be used to fund purchases and direct delivery of emergency items like medicine and first aid, food parcels and other relief supplies for the displaced and homeless victims.
The public can send their donations:

2 days after christmas
2 days after supposedly the holiest day of the year, comes a contrasting with the vilest of the year. The biggest of the fights, the loudest of the arguments, the most heated of the exchanges, the most things hurled in the bout. Many were awaken, many were silent. Many were shaken, and many things were never the same ever again.
I am reminded why I should leave this home. I am reminded again why I should hasten. It is 5am in the morning, and all I am wondering, is what's on other's minds. The first time, I feel the need for a religion, to see God and ask why these happen? I said this is the year of change, but I never expected the biggest turn to arrive in the middle of the night, in the wee hours of the morning, at 5 oclock at the start of the week.

Who listens to this crap anyways?
My friend just bought a CD for me from taiwan recently. It was a greatest hits of "wawa" 娃娃, and I truly enjoyed it. I tried to let a few of my friends listen to it, and most of them looked at me in puzzlement and asked "What the F@#@ is this?". "Really," they asked "who listens to this S@## anymore?" Indeed, indeed.
Now I started flipping through all the CDs and DVDs that I have collected over the years, and generally, they do contain plenty of obscure, hard to find items. Oh no, they are not like antique where they rise in prices. They are more akin to being my time capsule, kinda like my diary, my collections of memories, and they complement my photos, which document my life. Well, who cares if nobody listens to them But if you could recognize some of the mentions below, please drop me a note and lemme know that I am not alone :)

Week Review 19-Dec 2004
Event of the week: Christmas carolling at Curry Favor. The choir made my customers happy and I made them very happy with the opportunity and the food too. So it was a great happy holy night! :) But hey! They didn't sing my favourite!!! Oh yah and Li Fei Hui, an old timer in the local music scene came to my restaurant. I could hardly recognize him, but eventually, I was still psyched by his presence. Like coming face to face with your idol when you were young, I was kinda lost for words. Should've been a lil' bit more inquisitive. :)
Worst movie of the week: Blade Trinity ... Ok maybe it wasn't fair .. I fell asleep during the final climatic fight and only woke to find Mr Dracula dying. But this movie truly sucked .... Singapore's market doesn't warrant enough power to bring in the less commercial movies like "Million Dollar Baby" so we have to content with lousy big names movies like this one. Sorry that many singaporeans will have to watch such a stupid piece of crap during this holiday season .. or choose not to watch at all. Why did this vampire flick suck(:P) ? I just have to name one reason: Dracula looked like a Guess Model dressed to kill (literally) and running like a monkey throughout the entire film.
Activity of the week: Trip planning. Gonna go away on a trip during Chinese New Year. Initially thought is gonna be me, Kathryn, Liz Birdy and her friend to Maldives. Then discovered we got all the dates messed up. Now replanning with just me and Kat. I would really wanna go Maldives or Mauritius, but with Kathryn alone?? ... hmm .. maybe i should reserve that trip with my future gf instead. Right now, Japan would be the most likely choice. Keeping my fingers crossed... woohoo
Song of the Week: 綠色的水滴(Green water droplets) This song is by 丘丘合唱團(Chiu Chiu Band?) and the lead Singer was 娃娃(Doll). Ok ok ... what the F@#$ was that? This is a chinese group from the early eighties. The lead singer is one of my favourite and as she enter the 90s, she released a series of albums which I thoroughly adore. Now she is no longer singing but she still continues to write lyrics for songs. You'd be surprised what songs she has penned lyrics for - if you listen to chinese pop that is. But anyways, this is one pop cheezy tune that really brings back lotsa memory of my secondary school days.

Screw it - gotta find happies
Depressing times are here. But I still need to keep my state of mind sane and healthy. Wrote 2 scripts over the last 2 weeks. And I am planning to shoot one of them for a competition in April/May 2005. These "creative" exercises for the brain help to keep my mental state in balance. Spoken to a friend few nites ago who wanted to know how to sell a wireless network product in Singapore - talking about all these technical mambo jumbo was quite the liberating exercise. Chance for me to think out of the box makes me ALIVE.
Exercising the mind - this is one thing that keep oneself fresh and young. Same principle as doing workouts or physical exercises - it makes one feel more rejuvenated. How do I do this? Now my methods might be different, but this may just work for ya! ;-)
1) Talk about possiblities and dare to dream
2) Keep asking "what ifs"
3) Look at how people are doing it, understand why, see if you can throw it all away. Re-invent the wheel.
4) Ask why, instead of just following.
5) Put yourself in your customers' shoes - would you eat your own dog food?
6) BE GENEROUS and OPEN
7) Try doing something you've never thought you could do.
8) How to outdo your peers? By doing something that is totally different, so no one can compare.
Ok ... how cryptic can these things get? Use your imagination and see if you could figure how to apply these things to your everyday life - you might do things you never thought you possibly could. ;-)

Week Review 11-Dec 2004
Yup it is not the end of the week yet, but since I had missed last week's review, so here's one that covers them all.
Overall: Things seemed to have gotten worse since the last post. Work related shit is bogging me. Then there's the health aspect, which isn't faring too well either. Lotsa things happened these 2 weeks. Highlights are as follows:
1) Brought the kids to watch the incredibles
2) Shitty things at work
3) Did the videowork for the Marathon. Very bad case of Sunburn.
4) More Shitty things at work
5) Actually managed to teach a bunch of P5s to do a simple strucure for a website for Melrose Children Home
6) Got a special version of one of my fav movies - 笑傲江湖Swordsman. Yipee!
7) Even more Shitty things at work
The word on the street is things are not getting any brighter - and i am bracing for greater change. Maybe the best way is start afresh is to be radical. And maybe I need to be a bit more radical than I thought I am capable of.
Song of the week: 爱の初体验 Well, basically I've been listening to 张振狱's album for quite a bit this 2 weeks. Got the CD mah. And this is the track I turned to most often when I was driving. But he is quite the man! The songs he writes are quirky and personal. Very cool! A close second would be 沧海一声笑，but the DVD came late in the week and I had spent more time with the prior disc. But this might make it to being next week's song of the week. We'll see. :)
Movie of the 2 weeks: Watched the Incredibles and National Treasure. National treasure has got some pretty bad one liners. Incredibles was much better than I expected. Guess the trophy goes to the superhero family.
Lows: Boatloads of Shit at work. Family problems - probably hinting at a boring chinese new year this 2005. Better plan to leave the country for an escape. Feb 8 is not too far away.
Highs: not much. not much. Little moments to myself. To think and ponder.
Dudes of the week: Alex Lui and Gerald Tew. You guys stuck through with me through all the bad times and the good. Thanks for being there all the time. Alex, probably because you are not attached that's why you have been so free, but hey, I appreciate the company anyways. Wow ... I have actually known you guys for more than 22years!!! How gay is that? :P

The word on the street is things are not getting any brighter - and i am bracing for greater change. Maybe the best way is start afresh is to be radical. And maybe I need to be a bit more radical than I thought I am capable of.
Song of the week: 爱の初体验 Well, basically I've been listening to 张振狱's album for quite a bit this 2 weeks. Got the CD mah. And this is the track I turned to most often when I was driving. But he is quite the man! The songs he writes are quirky and personal. Very cool! A close second would be 沧海一声笑，but the DVD came late in the week and I had spent more time with the prior disc. But this might make it to being next week's song of the week. We'll see. :)
Movie of the 2 weeks: Watched the Incredibles and National Treasure. National treasure has got some pretty bad one liners. Incredibles was much better than I expected. Guess the trophy goes to the superhero family.
Lows: Boatloads of Shit at work. Family problems - probably hinting at a boring chinese new year this 2005. Better plan to leave the country for an escape. Feb 8 is not too far away.
Highs: not much. not much. Little moments to myself. To think and ponder.
Dudes of the week: Alex Lui and Gerald Tew. You guys stuck through with me through all the bad times and the good. Thanks for being there all the time. Alex, probably because you are not attached that's why you have been so free, but hey, I appreciate the company anyways. Wow ... I have actually known you guys for more than 22years!!! How gay is that? :P

Fav Movies of 2004 Part 3
Just watched the Incredibles yesterday. Woohoo! This is one head banging, hair swishing, and tree swinging movie that blows your mind. Just gotta write about it before the excitement fades. This is definitely one of the top 10 of the year!
The Incredibles:
This is really a great movie. Great way to end the year and the guys at Pixar has definitely delivered once again. The way they weave the relationship of all the characters are amazing. Every character are oozing with their own charm, and for awhile, you really do forget that you are watching an animated flick. In the past few animated flicks I saw, including Finding Nemo, I always find ton of characters trying to say witty things to make every moment of the movie count. Sometimes I just wish they could slow down a bit and let the story slow naturally a little. Like you sometimes get scenes of people doing their own things and not saying anything in some movies, the animated flicks seems to be so jammed packed with dialogues, you wonder if they were afraid that they will lose their credibilty.
However, this time, I didn't get that feeling at all with The Incredibles. The pacing was great. There were some quiet moments, and there was some hilarious ones, and then some loud head banger scenes. Totally rockadoo!! :) This is one of the best animated movie of ALL time. And in some ways, even better than Finding Nemo and Toy Story. Definitely one of the best in 2004.
Fahrenheit 911:
Possibly the most controversial movie of 2004. It was released to do what it eventually failed: to prevent George W. Bush from being re-elected. But still, I must say that Fahrenheit 911 is important in movie history because
1) it is an outstanding documentary on its own
2) it opened doors for many other documentaries
3) it brought documentaries to the masses
4) its agenda
Furthermore, having lived in US for 6 years, it really made me pay a lot more attention to the political scenes there. Having read the book "Dude where's my country?", I vaguely knew what the content of this movie was gonna be. However, it was still good to see the "evidence" brought to life in moving images. An important movie of our time, and this one's going into the history books.

Smooth sailing in the rough seas?
It was the best of times .... and I had my share of it. Now is the worst of times and I am having my fill. I think life is like the economy - you have the boom time ... then you have the cyclical depression. I have been trying to fight this drought for a while, and it is taking its toll. I am still trying to keep an optimistic outlook, but life never let you have it your way. When things happen, it comes in spades - be it good or bad.
Sailing in the seas, there are times when life is as calm (or boring? or stagnant?) as the stillwater. Then there are times, when the weather is good and windy, as things are going your way. Then the rough waters hit and the bad storms arrive, you have to prepare for the worse. But anytime in the course of sailing, life goes on. Calm or rough waters, life still carries on. And thus I have to find a way to survive, unless I want to give up fighting.
Surrender ... ah ... what an easy word to spell, and what an easy thing to do. It is the devil's temptation. It is the easy way out. It is his plan to make you give up and submit to his bidding. But could it also be God's will to humble me down and he wants to me surrender so I would lower my pride? It could be interpreted in so many ways.
Nonetheless, fight i am going to. But for much longer can I withstand? And how much further can I travel? The lonely seas with no end, where will find my land, my hope? Would North be true? Why Should I? ....

Fav Movies of 2004 Part 2.
This round, I will talk about 2 more movies that I enjoyed this year. The Terminal and The Passion of Christ.
The Terminal: Tom Hanks is back in form again. He plays a transit traveller stuck at the international Terminal of the NY airport with no citizenship, and nowhere to go. The screenplay is based on a true story, though the movie used a phony country name and the actual airport wasn't a US airport. However, this movie succeeds in the same way Cast Away did - it carried the main character through a process of change and discovery. Both characters were placed in a strange location where they cannot leave, and they both tried to find the reasons to carry on with their lives. The setup was good, with cleverly designed characters. Another thumbs up from me for this movie by Steven Spielberg.
The Passion of Christ: This movie is a powerful one. The message is universal, and the images are strong. Whether it is an accurate depiction of the last 12 hours is debatable. This interpretation was that of Mel Gibson's, which was inspired by a description of the Passion by Lady Anne Catherine Emmerich from the 18th century who had a vision of the crucification. However, the movie resulted was that faithful to the visions, and Mel Gibson's guerilla tactics of marketing the film had a huge impact on well it was eventually received. Churches all around the world hailed the film and praises for the film spread like wildfire. Eventually, the "documentary" style of the film worked great to bolster the film's credibilty, and the seriousness of the subject was dealt with in a respectful manner. A great movie that will touch and be watched by millions in years to come.

Week review 28-Nov 2004
Main Theme of the week: Death of James Wong. Shitty work week. Getting to convince myself to move on to a new target in my love life. The current one is starting to look hopeless. Maybe it has always been hopeless, but I guess I just can't get over the fact that I never even tried asking.
Lows of the week: Tension @ work. Cold war escalating.
Highlight of the week: Hmm ... been a pretty shitty week. So, highlight would be hanging out with my friend on the weekend. Nothing spectacular, but it was nice and relaxing. De-stressing .... Oh yah maybe a little bit. Got to know a new chick this week. She's got a nice personailty and sunny disposition. Rather attractive i might say. We'll see how things progress in the coming week.
Movie of the week: Birth ... and it is really not that enjoyable. The story does not explain well. It ends on a lingering note. It does not make u ask what if, nor does it make you think, but it just provided a question and didn't bother to explain it. What I felt was, the story teller couldn't make up his mind on which stand he wanted to take. Sorry, but i have made my stand, and that is this movie sucked.
Song of the week: 忘記他。"Forget him". Song first sung by Teresa Teng. Written by the venerable James Wong. Song of the week for obvious reasons.

James Wong 1941-2004
James Wong, one of the greatest eastern thinker, artiste, writer and composer of our time has passed. The reason why I wrote the previous post in mandarin, was because I thought it would be most appropriate. I love the chinese langauage, and the reason for so were the exposure to and influences by some very special people throughout my life. James Wong was a personality that defies classification. His grasp of the chinese language was impeccable and it was shown through his numerous compositions and writings. A multi-talented figure that will forever be remembered. I thank him for making chinese language such a thrill to learn and explore and as an inspiration on how i choose to lead my life.

黃霑先生過世了。這突如奇來的消息，果然令人不禁一振驚訝，也令我惋惜不已。在許多人們心中，黃前背只是一名不文老鬼頭，特別是那一些不熟悉香港社會的外國人，或只是透過電影而認識他的人。可怜的是這些人從來都沒接觸過他那才智過人的一面。我第一次對黃霑這名子產生印像時是當我在中學，開始發武俠小說熱時。當年我買了許多武俠連續劇主題曲及插曲的廣東ＣＤ，特別印像最深的如“上海灘"、“倆忘歅水裡”﹣而這幾首都是由黃霑作祠的。在中文作祠人當中，黃霑可稱造詣無雙，獨一無二。他所寫的祠深入淺出，能深入民心，卻又有一定的水平。他除了是位作祠人,也是作曲家，歌手，導演，編劇等等,在娛樂界素有‘鬼才’的稱號。

Embrace the change
It is a very depressing week. Lack of understanding, difficulty in trying to get ideas across, conflicts, and the inability to act within traditional confines. I hate being tied down by conventions, and I hate following trends. But working in an environment where people are unwilling to change and would rather play safe, is extremely stifling and unbearably annoying.
I feel helpless, ineffective, and caged. Why put me through these if you want me to come and exact changes? Why not do things differently so that people will be caught unaware? When unconventional ways of approach is exacted, there'll be no basis for comparison, cos there's no competition.
The disconnect between radical thinking and being secure, is the main reason for the lack of innovation. High risks, high returns. I am willing to take the risks, but sad to say, not many will. They'd rather die a slow and steady death, then to try different ways to capture the flag.
I urge all my friends to think different, not just out of the box, but throw out the box, kick the box and if the box is in the way, replace the box with something else. The world keeps turning, because people change. We would still be living in the 60s if no one tried anything new, or if we never tried to innovate, or if we didn't try to dream. There will be no inventions if there're no one willing to take chances. Embrace the change, and love it. Resist it, and stay in the same spot forever.

Week review 21-Nov 2004
Theme(s)/Main Plot/subplots of the week: Mainly a work week. Hanging out with my good friend alex over this past weekend. Nothing too crazy. Sunday was nice cos I met up with a friend from US that I haven't seen for a while. Nice to share crazy business ideas with him and maybe looking out for some opportunities in New York. Exciting :P Bought 2 new games : 1) Paper Mario 2) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. GREAT GAMES ....
Highlight of the Week: The 2 Games totally rocked my week. Especially Metroid Prime 2. Totally kicked Halo's ass. All the hype and shit. Halo's just another FPS!!! And the media and fans are hyping it like it is the next coming. WTF?? Granted, I only spent an hour with it, and I totally hate the controls. Well, will give it another shot this coming week and we'll see.
Movie of the week: Watched 2 movies this week. "Shutter" and "Girl Next Door". I love horror movies, but this round, the winner goes to "Girl Next Door". In case you haven't heard about it, it is because it never made it to Singapore. Movie is about a boy who falls for his super hot neighbour , who turned out to be a former porn star. Very very hot chick Elisha Cuthbert. :P Very funny story. Though it was a box office flop in US, it has definitely garnered a cult following. Totally made my week. :)

My good friend keeps playing this track everytime he's in my car, must have heard it at least 10 times over the past week. From the album "The Road Home". Highly recommended.

Gays and Trannies ... toilet adventure
Today, I went to the toilet .... and I didn't notice that I was followed by a woman. When I was in there, and I noticed the female was tagging behind me, I got worried. Did I enter the wrong toilet?? I turned around, just to double check, half expecting the lady to be embarrassed. But as I turned (think slow motion), I noticed that the lady was a rather tall one. She kinda avoided me quickly and ran into the first cubicle. Then i heard, the seat lifted, and almost immediately, a gush of water pouring into the toilet bowl. Then as I saw the urinals against the wall, I confirmed a few things.
1) I am in a Male's toilet
2) That was a Man-woman.
That set me thinking. Should a trannie (transvestite) - a male turned female - enter a male's toilet or female's toilet? Or should a gay enter a male's toilet or female one? Who should we protect, the real deal or the converted?

Fav Movies of 2004 Part 1.
After a pretty disappointing Shark's Tales last night, here I look back to some of my personal Favs of the year ... So far that is. There's still 1.5 mths before then end of the year and some pretty incredible films i am still very much looking forward to ... "The Incredibles", "The Birth", etc.... 2004 has seen it's share of good movies, and some that pop to my mind so far include, "Captain Sky and the World of Tomorrow", "Spiderman 2", "Farenheit 911", "Kill bill 2" etc. Counting down to the end of 2004, I will do a few "lookbacks" to the those movies that moved and awed me in the past year, and when the year ends, I will put up a top 10/15 or 20 list of the year's favs.
This installment features: "Spider-man 2" and "Kill bill 2"
Spider-man 2: I would not have imagined myself to list a superhero movie as one of the best film of the year. But this is one movie that not only looked good, had great special effects .. and most importantly, had a HEART! wow! .. a Superhero movie that actually had a proper story to push it through and still kicked ass with their action sequences. This is now one of my all time favourite superhero movies - putting it up in the ranks of Superman I,II and The Crow. What I loved about the main character was how "everyday" he was. He was a regular college student, with money problems, schoolwork problems and also girl problem. He was trying so hard to do so many things, to make money cos he needs to pay rent and to eat, to cope with his school work and all these while trying to save the world. You could feel sorry for him, and almost wished that he could just live like a normal person. The person who wrote the script was a genius. A great story for a great superhero. Bravo!
The director Sam Raimi is also one of my favourite directors, and his previous works were all wide and varied. His past works included the Evil Dead series, A Simple Plan, and also the TV series Hercules and Xena. Very versatile dude and you guys should really check out his previous movies - especially "A Simple Plan".
Kill Bill 2: Woah ... both these movies are sequels. But these sequels were in everyway equal or better than their predecessor. The interesting thing about Kill Bill 2 is that, those who disliked it gave the same reasons as those who disliked Spider-man 2 - they all complained that it was too slow. I feel really sorry for these people who would rather sit through a mindless action movie than to have one that explored the depths of the characters' relationships. They will never understand the true underlying work that went into creating these great characters and the beauty of really good writing. Well, that aside, why do I like Kill Bill 2? Basically it is because this sequel made Kill Bill 1 better. What i meant was that, after watching Vol. 2, it made me wanna watch Vol. 1 again. The script was cheesy, yet witty. The setup was simple yet ingenious. The acting was outrageous but extremely fun to watch. The format was unconventional yet so thoroughly original. I applaud the efforts of Quentin Tarantino. This is probably one of my all time favourite movies - along with Pulp Fiction.

His past works included the Evil Dead series, A Simple Plan, and also the TV series Hercules and Xena. Very versatile dude and you guys should really check out his previous movies - especially "A Simple Plan".
Kill Bill 2: Woah ... both these movies are sequels. But these sequels were in everyway equal or better than their predecessor. The interesting thing about Kill Bill 2 is that, those who disliked it gave the same reasons as those who disliked Spider-man 2 - they all complained that it was too slow. I feel really sorry for these people who would rather sit through a mindless action movie than to have one that explored the depths of the characters' relationships. They will never understand the true underlying work that went into creating these great characters and the beauty of really good writing. Well, that aside, why do I like Kill Bill 2? Basically it is because this sequel made Kill Bill 1 better. What i meant was that, after watching Vol. 2, it made me wanna watch Vol. 1 again. The script was cheesy, yet witty. The setup was simple yet ingenious. The acting was outrageous but extremely fun to watch. The format was unconventional yet so thoroughly original. I applaud the efforts of Quentin Tarantino. This is probably one of my all time favourite movies - along with Pulp Fiction.

Breaking up is hard to do ...
Got a call from a close friend of mine. She just broke up. Details would be spared to hide the identities of the parties. Let's just say that I know them both for more than a decade, and both the guy and girl are among my closest of friends. Now when i first broke up with one of my ex of 2 years, it took me close to 6 years to totally shake the impact. Now with this decade long relationship, I can't imagine how much harder it would be. We are talking about 10 years of memories. This is a hell lot of baggage to unload and it won't be easy.
Over the phone, I could tell she was holding back the tears. I tried to make sense of the senseless situation, but it was not easy. She asked me how I got over my past rejections (this chick who rejected me 3 times this year? :P) and how i moved on. She asked me how I could let things go so easily? The fact is I wasn't so "siao sar"( chinese for being "taking it in my stride"), it took 7 mths for me ... it could take much longer for her.
I did tell her that I had to find that "one single thought", that I could revisit to remind me, hey "stop wasting your time!". I took 7 mths to come to that realization, to wake up, to be enlightened, and make sense of the situation and move on. How about her? I do not know, but she would need to find that "one single thought" no matter what. It is usually the process of getting there that is the toughest.
What to do in the meantime before hitting the "single thought"? Get busy!! Volunteer to do some extra work in the office, take up a course, and catch up with all your friends! You'll be amazed how much you have missed out, and before long, you will find life full of hopes when all the opportunities (be it career wise or love wise) start knocking on the door. When you start complaining about all the "work" you are getting and the achievements you are making, you know you are on your way to recovery.

Highlight of the week: Karaoke twice a week? Bad for my throat, but good for my karma. ;) New shelf and new chair from Ikea ... :) I am easy to please.

Movie of the week: Shark Tales. What a downer!
Shark tales/Finding Nemo
Dreamworks has gotta get some creative juices pumping and stop hitting on others for ideas .. and I am talking about their animation studios. Though I do admit, I LOVE shrek1 and shrek2. However, the rest of their animated features are just ... underwhelming. After all the glowing reviews from friends and more friends, I told myself I just gotta check it out. And check it out I did last night.
Now Shark tales is not too bad. Really. It really wasn't as bad as I thought, but honestly, it is not good either. It was rather lousy, just not as lousy as I thought it would be. There were a few jokes that made me smile, but none that made me laugh. The main character played by Will Smith, somehow felt subdued and he didn't even seemed to be havin as much fun as I see him in other movies like "Independence Day", "Bad Boys" etc. Robert De Niro's Shark also pulled in an unispired voice acting.
Shrek was clever and witty, but Shark Tales was like a kid trying to be a smart alec. Was it by any chance that Dreamworks tried to rush out "Antz" when Pixar was releasing "A Bug's Life", and now "Shark tales" came right after Pixar's roaring underwater success "Finding Nemo". It is obvious with all of Dreamwork's efforts, they are trying to build an image that "we are making animations for the thinking adults". Though Pixar's animation works are generally more "family oriented", they succeed at being seemingly kiddy, yet having adult thematics and feelings injected into them. Pixar tries to be kiddy with the looks and animation, yet adult with their topics. Dreamworks tries to be adult both in their dialogues and character designs, and you can see this in almost all their efforts, yet so far, the only one that shone through was Shrek. Was it by any chance that Shrek was also not designed to knock off anyone's efforts, but by being creative and original?
Creativity and innovation drives the market and there can be no better examples than Shrek and Pixar's animated features.

STD vaccine ... wooo :)
Very interesting news. I wonder what are the consequences. It is quite a rather cool vaccine. It will
1) prevent getting the disease
2) prevent spreading the disease .. even thru sex!
This vaccine may be injected to teenagers at school, before they have the opportunity to learn the "ways of the world". I can imagine some singaporean students taking the jabs alongside their "BCG" and saying "hey, this is the sex jab. Can have sex after this liao!". Wow. I wish i could live in the times to see how this goes. :P too bad i am not in primary school anymore. :P

New York New York!
I have always loved New York City. And reading these two articles made me felt even stronger for it. The people living there, are diverse, colorful, and so receptive to "thinking differently". The people you speak to there, are more streetsmart, enthusiatic about their jobs and just basically more passionate about their own beliefs, yet theya re also extremely open to new and different ideas. They love being where they are and being who they are. I just wish the rest of America is more like that. Ironic isn't it, that they were the ones being attacked, yet 80% of them voted against Bush. Hope that will send some sort of signal to those heartlanders who overwhelmingly voted for Bush.

2 days of lives
These past 2 days almost felt like a scheme, a setup of sorts that had things happening and people interacting with me that gives me an opportunity to reflect on my own life. Or maybe it is just pure coincidence. Really the past 2 days almost seemed like a drama unfolding upon me, like the movie magnolia, where lives of seemingly unrelated people, intertwined and affecting one another. Granted my life is not as disastrous as those in the movie, but the events are pretty dramatic of sorts - in their own little ways.
1) Cash problem. - I needed cash urgently. Something happened int he past 2 days, that seemed to help suddenly with this problem. My stocks went up by a few thousand dollars, and I just gotten a few payments from my own personal projects ... and they all happened in the same few days. The balance is neutral. Though normally I would have been pretty upset with the sudden lack of cash but this time, everything unrelated happening recently seemed to have cushioned the whole situation. Luck? Coincidence?
2) 2 nights ago, a customer of mine came by to pick up his wedding DVD which I should have prepared, but forgot to bring. He had several times wanted to pay for my wedding video services but never got the chance to. He did so that night without picking up the DVD even though i insisted there's no need to. Guess what? the money did come in handy the very next day.
3) Now the DVD ... since my client didn't pick up the DVD 2 nights ago when he was supposed to, he promised to come by last night. Something cropped up, and he couldn't make it. That in turn led to a serious of events that could only be accounted as fate .... The DVD on my counter, attracted a small talk with this customer of mine, and we eventually sat down and engaged in a very interesting conversation. This man, let's just call him Peter, seemed to share plenty of likes and interests with me and we talk quite a bit about short filmmaking, the importance of a strong script and story, and editing and the works. A new friend made, in a matter of minutes, through a series of seemingly unconnected events ....
4) Now that's not the end. He went on to open up to me and told me about his own life. I have this weird ability of somehow making people feel comfortable opening up to me and talking to me like they've known me for years. But anyhow, I learnt that he is now undergoing a separation, and have 3 children. He told me how old they were but I didn't quite remember, but one of them being 22mths. Now why is this significant to mention? Guess what? I had just let someone go at my other workplace (who was recently separated and has a kid of ) just one day before. Now is this a sign? What is this whole situation trying to tell me?
5) Now talking about the person I had let go 2 days ago. It was for some very strange reasons but both the party and myself understood that it was not an easy decision. He ended up being the one consoling me and telling me that there's no hard feelings. It is never easy to fire anyone, no matter what reasons there may be. But this time, it almost seemed like he was fated to leave, and I was fated to be the one to make the decision to let him go. Very hard to explain, but somehow, all these things seem to happen for a reason.
6) Now this last thing seemed unconnected to the above 5 matters, but I have a feeling that I am scheduled to receive the news only yesterday. One of my staff have been very down in the past few weeks. The past 2 days, things seemed to have gone for the worst. She would come in, and stare into blankness, and suddenly tears would flow from her eyes. I tried to reach out to her but she would refuse to talk to me (or anyone for that matter). Initially I had thought it was due to the recent wage/tips which I had withheld from everyone but I had learnt of the truth last night finally. It appears that her grandmother was very very ill. I supposed it must be life threatening or it wouldn't have affected her so bad. Now this news affected me most personally. Why you may ask? My own mother recently had a relapse of a condition of hers which I didn;t think much of before. She had to be rushed to the doctor and I took a day off (there's no excuse in this case:P) to bring her to my friend's wife who is a doctor. My mom was given a full checkup, and found out that she was under too much stress, and that's why she kept fainting. My employee's sadness suddenly triggered me to ask myself, "How would I feel should something bad really happen to my mom?" This reminded me of one of the reasons why I was working so hard - I need to make sure I can take care of my brothers, and especially my youngest sister (and god knows, my father?) should any (touch wood) bad things happen. I need to be prepared ....
7) Now the 2 persons that I mentioned before who were separated? Meeting them strengthened my will to work harder because my family is in a similar situation. I won't go into details, but those who are close to me should understand what I mean. I am the only one who can help the rest of the family should any bad things happen. Maybe this is the final message of them all - I should be ready for the worst.

Dou Hua
Now i just gotta write this down before I forget. :P
On my way home I stopped by a famous beancurd (dou hua) store to buy some soy bean milk to drink. There I saw a very "well endowed" woman. And this inspired the following :
小花生来丑小鸭
从来都没有人夸
但她每天喝豆花
结果变成大奶妈！

Yes .... Mr George W Bush is gonna be with us for the next 4 years to come. Kerry conceded eventually. The only good thing we can read from this, is that he will not be here beyond the 4 year term. Close to half of America will not be pleased with the outcome, but they would have to live with the slight majority.

Bad move buddy ...
There are times when hard decision needs to be made, but when you made it, it might not have the desired results as you expected. I have had the pleasure of executing a bad move recently. :P
Now as business goes, many things should not have been decided upon without thorough thought, and I do admit that the execution was partly flawed. The intention was to cause an alarm, and to serve as a wake up call, but it seemed to have some side effects of lowering the morale. Well, what's done cannot be undone, and the hardest part was trying to spin it in a way that will have the results we want, but yet not having the desired side effects.
All these must sound somewhat crytic, but it is meant to be that way. Sorry if all these doesn't make sense to you. The takeaway is (if there's any), is that you should always put yourself in other people's shoes whenever you make any decisions. Yes I always do that, but this time, it was truly overlooked. Of course, I don't forsee any of my staff reading this, but even if they did, what the heck. The aim was to get attention, and attention I had gotten. Everyone is talking about it and that's what I wanted. Next month things should return to usual. In the meantime, i forsee that it is gonna be a tough month ahead ....
